Description

Historical token from the reign of Louis XIV of France, commemorating justice reforms. The obverse shows Louis XIV riding a horse to the right, surrounded by the inscription LVD · XIIII · D · G · F · ET · NAV · REX (“Louis XIV, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre”). The reverse depicts a standing robed figure, possibly representing Justice, facing forward. The figure holds scales in the left hand and raises a sword in the right. Surrounding inscription ARMIS TVTAE LEGES translates to “Laws protected by arms.” This 2nd type design is part of a series of tokens reflecting political and judicial themes of the Sun King’s reign.
