Description

This Rechenpfennig, a calculation or counter token, presents an intricate portrayal of Charity, emblematically crowned and seated amidst radiant clouds, as designed by Kilian Koch. The obverse displays Charity distributing manna, assisted by angels, over the cityscape of Paris, symbolizing benevolence and providence. The legend "PROSPERATVM EST OPVS IN MANI[BVS] EIVS NORIBE", meaning "The work has prospered in his hands, of Nuremberg", crowns the scene. On the reverse, a three-masted ship braves a turbulent sea, alluding to resilience and steadfastness, encapsulated by the motto "FLVCTVAT * NEC * MERGITVR CK", which translates to "Tossed but not sunk", the storied motto of Paris. These tokens, beyond their original accounting purpose, evolved to represent the social and civic pride of municipal administrations. Motto of Nurnberg is "In her hands the work of the city was crowned with success Nuremburg (NORIBERGENSIS)". This is a very beautiful preserved relatively big jetton (counter token).
