Description

This holed Ort Gdański coin, minted in 1624 in Gdańsk (historically known as Danzig), features the crowned bust of King Zygmunt III Waza on the obverse, within a beaded inner circle. The inscription "SIGIS 3 D G REX POL M D L R PR" frames the monarch's portrait. The reverse showcases the crowned arms of the city of Gdańsk in a curved shield topped with a cross, flanked by facing lions, with "MONETA CIVIT GEDANENSIS 1624" encircling it. This coin belongs to one of four main subtypes based on the king's portrait and the date structure, with this particular piece being a part of the 1623-1626 subtype characterized by a third bust with a thick ruffed collar and a date format featuring two digits on the obverse and two on the reverse.
