Description
Promotional counter token issued in Dordrecht in 1579 urging continuation of the Dutch Revolt. The obverse depicts soldiers in battle with the legend PA·T·RIA·P·RAESTAT·PUGNARE·PRO. The reverse shows the headless bodies of Counts Egmont and Horn, with their severed heads impaled on posts, surrounded by the legend DECIPI·1579·QVAM·SIMVLATA·PACE. Lamoral, Count of Egmont, and Philip de Montmorency, Count of Horn, were prominent noblemen executed on 5 June 1568 by order of the Duke of Alba, an act that helped ignite the Dutch Revolt. This token served as a warning to negotiators in 1579 about the risks of seeking peace with Spain.
