Description
This commemorative medal, struck in 1948, marks the 300th anniversary of the Peace of Westphalia, signed in Münster on 24 October 1648. The treaty formally ended the Thirty Years’ War in the Holy Roman Empire and the Eighty Years’ War between Spain and the Dutch Republic. It is widely regarded as a milestone in European diplomatic history, establishing principles of state sovereignty and religious tolerance.
The obverse of the medal features an allegorical scene with two soldiers shaking hands, representing reconciliation. Between them is a nude female figure, depicted dancing—likely symbolising Peace or Liberty regained after war. The inscription reads: “EBK PAX OPTIMA RERUM”, a Latin phrase meaning "Peace is the best of things."
The reverse shows a part-demolished religious building, reflecting the widespread destruction and rebuilding that followed the conflict. The full reverse inscription reads: “WESTFÄLISCHER FRIEDE MÜNSTER 24 OKT. 1648 /1948”, directly referencing the historical date and location of the treaty. This medal belongs to the category of post-war European commemoratives, often issued to encourage unity and reflection on peace in the aftermath of WWII.
