Description
This uncurculated 10 Euro commemorative coin, in a protective case was issued by Belgium in 2006 to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Justus Lipsius (1547–1606), a notable Flemish philologist and humanist scholar of the Renaissance. The obverse displays a map of the European Union, surrounded by the twelve stars of the EU flag, with the official trilingual country name and denomination. The exact obverse inscription reads: “BELGIQUE BELGIE BELGIEN 10 EURO 2006”.
The reverse features a detailed portrait of Justus Lipsius, modelled after an original engraving by Van Dijk. The reverse lettering is clearly inscribed as: “JUSTUS LIPSIUS 1547 1606”. This modern numismatic issue reflects Belgium’s intellectual heritage and its recognition of Renaissance scholarship. The coin was minted in a limited quantity of 50,000 pieces, under the reign of King Albert II. A desirable addition to collections focused on humanist figures, European Union coinage, or Belgian commemoratives.
